Breakthrough Public Schools

The National Association of Secondary School Principals has released a list of Breakthrough Middle and High Schools for 2008. NASSP and the Metlife Foundation have recognized these schools, all of which serve many poor students, for dramatically improving student achievement.
NASSP's selection criteria resemble (and, in fact, influenced) central elements of the Learning First Alliance's Emerging Vision for the future of public schools. The breakthrough schools personalize education. They foster collaborative leadership, which empowers their educators to succeed. And they align rigorous curriculum, engaging instruction and effective multiple assessments with high standards that matter. (You can read more these criteria in NASSP's seminal report, Breaking Ranks II)
We all need to spread the word about schools that are doing extraordinary things, so check out the 2008 Breakthrough Schools--and tell your friends!

Breakthrough Schools Excell!
Through focused, collaborative efforts, on the part of staff and community, these schools are seeing steady improvement on all student success indicators. The schools are a prime example of how the Core Areas of Breaking Ranks II and Breaking Ranks in the Middle (personalization, collaboration and curriculum/instruction/assessment) can be adapted to individual school settings and serve as the foundational principles for school improvement. The school stories are compelling.
