Check out these new accounts of what's working in public schools and districts:

  • Community and School Join Forces to Improve Student Writing (Berkeley and Albany school districts, California), 3/10/2008
  • Arlington's Community Involvement Helps Students Succeed (Carlin Springs Elementary School, Arlington, Virginia), 3/7/2008
  • Measuring Success One Student at a Time (Walsh School District, Walsh, Colorado), 3/4/2008
  • Road Trip to Success: Engaging Families and Children in Coopersville (Coopersville Area Public Schools, Coopersville, Michigan), 3/1/2008
  • Many thanks to those who submitted stories.  Keep them coming!

    Family-school-community partnerships - a new revival

Keep posting such wonderful stories! What these stories illuminate is the importance of family-school-community partnerships. It is the recognition that schools can¿t do it alone, and that there families and communities that have untapped assets that when utilized can maximize students¿ learning and development. These partnerships are essential for building trust and lasting relationships among the adults in students¿ lives. They also increase enrichment opportunities students can access to boost their academic achievement and readiness for their next transition/milestone. The literature on these partnerships has been around for over a century, and the models for effective collaboration exist dating back to 1890s. As the education field rethinks such partnerships in the context of the 21st Century, we need to take a look back to history for successful practices and lessons learned, as well as to think more critically as to what makes this revival of partnerships with schools unique and sustainable.

    Helpful website!

What a great resource!  We live a few miles away from the Carlin Springs school and had no idea they had such a diverse curriculum or offered classes to parents and home visits.  Thanks for this website; I will come back!
